I think that everyone visiting Lisboa – Lisbon – is awestruck by the omnipresent covering of the buildings with decorative tiles. So beautiful and decorative. The dominant color is cobalt blue, though yellow and green slip in as accent colors.

The tiles sometimes depict pastoral or angelic scenes, with odd farm critters or winged figures. But often buildings are covered with repeated tiles forming an overall pattern that wows the eye. Either way, it’s enchanting!

So it’s appropriate, and informative, that Lisbon would have a National Tile Museum, and it’s really worth the visit, at the east edge of town. (It makes a nice walk, too.)

National Tile Museum – Museu Nacional Azulejo

“The Tile Museum was founded in 1965. In 1980 it became the National Museum, and its main mission is to safeguard, conserve, study and publicise Portuguese tiles. Its permanent exhibition is presented chronologically, covering the history of tiles in Portugal from the mid-15th century to the present day.”
